The start
Several WHS teachers attended our presentation at a LoopEd Conference and were interested in adopting the HVHS programme.
We arranged to take part in their Teacher Only Day and spent it with all the Maths Faculty, talking about the programme and how it might be adapted to suit. We focused on the practicalities of running the system and how students, staff and parents accepted the changes. We also planned to attend for a second day later in the year.
Move to WHS
Bernie moved to WHS and was able to provide day to day support for staff and especially the leaders of the faculty. As at HVHS, all teachers were keen to be involved in the programme and the later part of the year was spent getting the video resources prepared.
Bernie also used the funding from the Bright Spots award as 0.2 release time from teaching. This allowed more flexible support in teachers classes, planning, presentations and a hosting a number of visits from other schools. It also allowed a week in Auckland investigating other similar initiatives.
Running the course
The basic reasoning for the change was maintained, even though many "day to day" aspects may have looked different.
A major "first step" was to ensure that teachers were aware of the reasons for the changes and that they were involved in the set up. The weekly meetings were also an important consideration as this allows small issues to be sorted quickly and for everyone to benefit from everyone else's concerns, successes and planning.
